He taught at Flinders University (tutor, 1984-1985) and the National University of Singapore (1985-1986), has been a visiting Fellow at the universities of Hawaii and Bourgogne, and has made several visits to Indian universities. He has taught at Wollongong University since (1987) and was made Associate Professor in (1999) and awarded a University Fellow in 2017. Paul Sharrad was a founding editor (1979-1985) of the CRNLE Reviews Journal, and editor of New Literatures Review 1987-2004. He has written extensively about Postcolonial literatures in particular Indian and Pacific writing.
