CreatorSPACE Inc.Date1984-1999DescriptionIn 1981 a NSW Public Works Department report proposed that South Shellharbour Beach be considered as a favourable site for the construction of a boat harbour because of the amount of publicly owned land that had the potential for development around the site. Several feasibility studies were commissioned and undertaken in the ensuing years. The Preserve South Shellharbour Beach (PSSB) Committee, the predecessor agency of SPACE, was an informal group established by concerned residents in 1984 with the purpose of opposing the intended development of the boat harbour and marina. The Committee’s opposition to the development was based on two key areas. The first focused on the ecological repercussions of the destruction of South Shellharbour Beach, underwater reefs and wetlands and the movement of the adjacent playing fields and public golf course. The second reason centred on the opposition to the financial support of the development by Shellharbour Council and ratepayers. SPACE Inc. became an incorporated body on 19 October 1994 in order to be formally active and ensure representation at formal inquiries.
