The material originates from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Great Britain and the United States, with publication dates ranging from the 1890s to the late 1960s. Many of the texts and readers are representative of the types used by Australian state Departments of Education (or Departments of Public Instruction as some were previously known). As such, the collection represents a valuable source of information for research into the history of school education in Australia. The collection was compiled during the 1960s and 70s by Doris E. Chadwick, assistant editor of the New South Wales School Magazine from 1929 to 1950 and editor from 1950 to 1959. It was acquired by the Archives in 1999 from OTEN (the Open Training and Education Network), an Institute of the NSW TAFE Commission.
