CreatorIllawarra district Rugby UnionDate1953-1997DescriptionInterest in Rugby Union was revived in the Illawarra in 1949. Until 1951, the Wollongong and District Rugby Union Football Club played the bye team in the Sydney Third Grade competition. An Illawarra District competition commenced in 1953 with four teams. The competition later expanded to be conducted over three grades. The District Union also competed in the New South Wales Country Rugby Union competition. The records of the Illawarra District Rugby Union (I.D.R.U.) for the period between 1949 and 1956 were largely lost in 1956, when they were eaten by a goat.
