Southern District Branch.Date1900-1966DescriptionThe first district association of coal miners on the South Coast of NSW was formed in December 1878. This association lapsed and was not revived until 1885 when the Miners’ Mutual Protective Association (1885-1890)] was formed. In 1915, an association of colliery workers in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania was brought about by the establishment of the Australasian Coal and Shale Employees’ Federation. For convenience, this body is usually referred to as the Miners’ Federation. On the South Coast, the enticements of the Federation include the Amalgamated Miners’ Association of Australasia (1890-1896], Illawarra District Council of the Australasian Labour Federation (1896 - 1901), Illawarra Colliery Employees’ Federation (1901-19022] and the Workers’ Industrial Union of Australia (Mining Department).Collection NameUOW Archival Collection InventoriesAustralasian Coal and Shale Employees' Federation (Miners' Federation) Southern District, NSW.
