The Park includes the whole of the summit of Mount Keira, an area of approximately 22 acres. The plateau, sloping gently to the westward from its highest development near the easternmost point of the Park, consists of a capping of Hawkesbury sandstone resting on the less durable rocks of the Narrabeen series and the Upper Coal Measures. The massive nature of the Hawkesbury sandstone has resulted in the sheer cliffs on the seaward escarpment, which provide many vantage points, from which incomparable views can be had of the Illawarra coastline and particularly of the main city area of Wollongong. The Plateau is just over 1500' above sea level, the height at the trigonometrical survey station being 1541'. From the level of the lookouts, the distance to the visible horizon to seaward is 48 miles. Under favourable conditions, the oil storage tanks at Kurnell, 33 miles to the north, are easily discernible, and to the south it is possible to pick out the high headland north of the entrance to Jervis Bay over 40 miles away. 800' vertically below the Park are the workings of Kemira Colliery, which was established in 1858 and is the oldest working coal mine in the district. From the mine entrance, on the eastern slope of Mount Keira, the workings extend under the Park, and beyond, for a distance of about 3 miles. -- This park belongs to you. It has been developed largely by voluntary effort, and you are asked to look after it, all flora and fauna are protected. Have you considered that many thousands visit this park annually, and if each visitor removed just one flower or broke one branch, the area would be quickly denuded. Barbecues and rubbish receptacles have been provided - please use them.
