The inaugural meeting of the South Coast Conservation Society (S.C.C.S.) was held on 5th December 1969. The Society's aim was to encourage conservation of the region's natural environment and to protest against excessive development. Major issues addressed included the effects of coal mining on the Illawarra escarpment, transportation problems, coastal development by industry, and preservation of parklands. Due to declining membership numbers, the South Coast Conservation Society ceased operation in late 2004, after 35 years of service to the local community.
The South Coast Conservation Society produced a monthly journal titled Smoke Signal: Journal of the South Coast Conservation Society which was published between 1970 and 2004.
