Song of the Sepik - Effects, Part 1

This reel contains examples of the singing , flute music and drumming of the peoples of two subdistricts of the Sepik district, territory of Papua and New Guinea. The first bracket comes from the Ambunti sub - district, generally known as the Mid Sepik, as against the Upper and Lower Sepik. The Mid Sepik is an area that stretches roughly from Ambunti to [Angora?] and includes many lake areas on either side of the main river. This recording comprises eleven cuts. 1. The Sepik Garamut or [Slit Gong ?] -- 2. A head hunters song of success upon return from a successful raid -- 3. A war chant followed by savage ... [?] -- 4 .The pig hunt. This is a descriptive song, the round up, the kill and the triumphal return -- 5. A cassowary hunt -- 6. Initiation ritual, this is the song that is sung all night, the night before the boys are admitted to the spirit house. There are two parts; the first part without leg rattles, the second with leg rattles -- 7. Another initiation song this is the song sung while the boys are having the incisions cut into their body -- 8. The talking flutes of Aibum village - two examples -- 9. A head hunters song with a Pidgin introduction. The song is old and has been passed on by the Taboona, the ancestors long dead. The song is the absolute property of the Aibum village people nobody else may sing it on pain of a punitive raid -- 10. A song by the people of a nearby village announcing their intention of building a new Haus Tambaran -- 11.
