The islands are administered as part of Australia's Papuan territory, and administrative policy disturbs the natural rhythm of life as little as is compatible with Australia's desire to advance social and economic welfare. The coastal Trobrianders are fishermen and skilful canoe men. They use three types of canoes; a small dug out for individual and family use, a larger fishing canoe, with a platform of lashed saplings, and a large sea-going canoe used for trading and ceremonial expeditions to other islands. Charles Julius, anthropologist with the nutrition survey party that visited the island in 1947 discusses canoe performances with a Trobriander who demonstrates the use of a baling scoop. In her maiden race with other canoes it is always etiquette to let a new canoe win. Photograph taken by A.N.I.B.
