Wollongong from the Air

ContributorJackson, Charles Frederick ThomasDate1938DescriptionThe University of Wollongong Library has made available the earliest known aerial footage of Wollongong, recorded in a biplane, circa 1938. UOW historian Glenn Mitchell has advised that the footage was commissioned by C. F. T. Jackson, local representative for federal politician William Wentworth, to survey land available for development in the Port Kembla area. The black and white film opens with the biplane VH-UUI taxiing on Mascot airport and cuts to aerial footage of the Illawarra from Thirroul to Wollongong, Tom Thumbs Lagoon, Port Kembla, Shellharbour and finally Kiama.
