Although the king tides of last night have passed, huge waves were still hammering the coast today. Wollongong Breakwater lived up to its name as the waves poured over it, sending spray high into the air. -- Peak hour traffic on Spring Hill Road was held up late this afternoon when a coal truck plowed into a small car. The force of the collision pushed the small car onto the side of the road, and blocked both lanes. -- The Department of Immigration mobile caravan has arrived on the South Coast for the first time. Its first stop was in Corrimal but during the next month it will be in Wollongong and other major South Coast centres. -- Work stopped briefly today at Metal Manufacturers, Port Kembla, for a gymnastics display. In a workshop at the case and drum factory, the floor was cleared to make way for a gymnastics display by Port Kembla YMCA members. -- For most people, the YWCA means a hostel for girls and young women, but it's starting to branch into all forms of community work. The General Secretary of the YWCA in Great Britain visited Wollongong today, and news man David Hill asked Miss Evelyn Joynte if she thought the YWCA was outmoded. -- One of the most dangerous over bridges in the Wollongong area will lose its reputation by the end of the month. The bridge is the Rothery Road overbridge at Corrimal, which has been the scene of many accidents. At a cost of thousands of dollars, Wollongong City Council is widening the bridge to take four lanes of traffic.
